They paid us visits. They hunted and gathered.
Taking what they want, be it materials or bodies
to consume and restructure into more of their own
flesh, and to reconstruct into more of their own.
To have to stare up at even the most mildly
high-ranking of these putrid imitations,
it was gut-churning.

But we complied, for what alternative was there?
Our weapons did nothing for us, our bullets even being
absorbed into an extra layer of exoskeleton composed
of lead. All we could do is accept this new predator
as a fact of life, protecting what mattered
most to us all the while.
